Global Warming - PhilWikiWiki

Myth: The science of global warming is too uncertain to act on.

Fact: There is no doubt that scientists concur that global warming is occurring.

  • The earth's climate is changing rapidly with increasing temperatures on the rise
  • The last three five-year periods are the three warmest on record
  • Warmer temperatures increase the probability of drought
  • 1998 had one of the most driest seasons in 104 years
  • Chances of more intense rainstorms
  • National annual precipitation has increased 5-10%
  • Deadly heat waves and spread of diseases
  • 2003 - extreme heat waves caused over 20,000 deaths
  • More powerful and dangerous hurricanes
  • Hurricane Katrina is an example
  • Sea-Level rise - currently sea-level rise is 3x the historical rate
  • Eco-sysem shifts and species die off
  • In areas of California sea life is shifting north most likely due to warming waters

THE GLOBAL WARMING WE ARE EXPERIENCING IS UNAUTURAL - PEOPLE ARE CAUSING IT

IF WE ARE THE CAUSE...WHAT DOES MORALITY REQUIRE OF US?

"My work is based on the assumption that clarity and consistency in our moral thinking is likely, in the long run, to lead us to hold better views on ethical issues." - Peter Singer(Philosopher)

The Big Debate

The global warming alarmists who claim global warming is primarily caused by human activity and unless we make immediate drastic changes in our behavior, natural disasters such as increased storms and global flooding will result in irreversible global catastrophe over the next 100 years

Vs.

The global warming skeptics, who are generally not skeptical of global warming itself, but of the gloom and doom predictions of the alarmists, as well as the role that human activities actually play in the warming trend, pointing instead to historical climate cycles driven by natural causes.

If there is any doubt in ones mind about the cause of global warming...shouldn't the safer road be travelled...

GLOBAL WARMING: Point of No Return?

Denial is not the answer...

Our individual philosophies provide meaning to the answers we give ourselves... we must really dig deep into our morals and let them guide us. Is global warming our priority?

I agree with the commenters below in saying that global warming needs to be addressed immediately! It is not a hoax...it is reality. There is so much scientific evidence showing us just the beginning of the kind of destruction we can bring upon ourselves if we continue to push aside the issue of global warming. For example, ocean levels are rising each year as the temperatures rise and glaciers melt. I am glad that our new future president, Barack Obama, is confronting the issue and has a team of highly skilled professionals to do so.
there is hope. (:

Global warming needs to be address whether humans are the cause or not. The changes we make will only help our children and their children. Simple things like changing our light bulbs and recycling is a step in the right direction. We can all agree that there has definitely been a change in the temperature and no matter what the cause we should do little things that can help our planet out. Here is a website that gives little things we can all do to help out…environment.about.com/od/globalwarming/tp/globalwarmtips.htm

global warming may be evident today, but how does such a demanding economy do any changes to not stop global warming, but slow it down. we have global warming not because we are abusing the earth, but because we are a demanding economy. there will always be the green party who wants to end it, but look at how big the party is. we are getting more and more technologically advanced and demand more energy and create more fossil fuels. a very small slow down could be possible, but it wont slow it down. we are a demanding economy. NOW RECOGNIZE IT.
