I’ve always had an interest in scary movies, ever since watching horror flicks like Carrie and Psycho as a child and growing up with films by Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow). However, instead of the horror movies produced today, I’m more a fan of the older classics such as Dracula and Frankenstein. It’s not that I dislike modern horror films, but mostly because I find such movies heavily rely on gratuitous gore (e.g. themes like self-mutilation). I agree with a previous post that many of these classics show telltale signs of being fake, though I think it’s unfair to compare such films with the technology we use to make movies today. However, this is why I enjoy watching classics more—it allows our imagination to run free and let the details unfold in our own minds than on screen. There are times when I watch horror movies and wonder how the writers or directors are able to envision such ideas for a book or film, especially the books written by Stephen King. When I think of what we learned in this course, in particular the topic on philosophical self-portraits, I am curious to see how their portraits would look.

Tobie1286 Horror Movies 0 May 16 2007, 6:22 PM EDT by Tobie1286

From my experience, people either absolutely love horror movies, or they hate them and just wont watch them. It is easy to make the characters more real and actually become frightenend. The more descriptive the creator of a horror movie is and the more we are able to see that they do, the more the character becomes real to us. Movies now are scarier than back in the day because we used to be able to find comfort in seeing the strings and noticing the fakeness of the movie; techonology has eradicated that from todays movies. Nozick saw the same thing in The Examined Life when he mentioned that the most real literary characters are the ones that we more the most about. The more we know, the more we can take away from it.

Anonymous Rocky Horror Picture Show 0 May 12 2007, 11:06 PM EDT by Anonymous

I found this site to be very interesting and it had a lot of good movies that have a very big cult following. Movies such as The Shining, The Exorcist, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When I was on this site I thought about the Rocky Horror Picture show and how the movie has a HUGE cult following. I know that in certain places they show this movie every Friday at the same time every single week and have been doing this for a very long time. It’s a huge deal for the people that go there and people get up on stage and act out the songs. I would love to go to one of these shows sometime because I really like this movie, but I hear they make the newcomers get up onstage and do something, which I don't think I would enjoy. Anyways, here is a clip where the whole gang is singing "Time Warp!"
