Language can be painfully
logical if you make it that way!
Wittgenstein's formal achievements in logic and mathematics are hailed by many as a critical step in the foundations of mathematics and even the development of computer languages.

Wittgenstein's Tractatus (nice site!)

Oddly enough, he completely rejected the basic assumptions of this philosophy in his later philosophy which spawned a new direction in semantics and philosophy of language which is unfolding as we speak, so to speak. Wittgenstein's remarks below.

The following consists of comments upon selected passages from Wittgenstein's 'Philosophical Investigations' relevant to the 'private language argument'. For the benefit of those who do not possess a copy of the Investigations The original text is shown in red. Commentary below.

Kudos if you can launch a counterargument to Descartes' Demon Hypothesis vis-a-vis Wittgenstein's Private Language Argument.

243
... could we also imagine a language in which a person could write down or give expression to his inner experiences ... for his private use? ...
244
How do words refer to sensations? ...
245
For how can I ... try to use language to get between pain and its expression?
246
In what sense are my sensations private? ...
256
Now what about the language which describes my inner experiences and which only I myself can understand? ...
257
"What would it be like if human beings showed no outward signs of pain... ? ...
258
I want to keep a diary about the recurrence of a certain sensation. ...
259
Are the rules of the private language impressions of rules?
260
"Well, I believe that this is the sensation S again." ...
261
What reason have we for calling "S" the sign for a sensation? ...
262
... you must inwardly undertake to use the word in such-and-such a way ...
263
... A queer question.
264
"Once you know what the word stands for, you understand it, you know its whole use."

since we got into the section about language, i thought i would post a video of a song i like by the kings of convenience "misread". this song is about misinterpretation of actions and observations as well as the miscommunication of two people. this is a common problem with many people. we throw off signals, facial expressions, dry remarks that may come off as rude when it was not intended at all. i notice that many people tend to make these assumptions before they know any actual knowledge of the truth. but that statement is contraindicated in a verse in this song where it says, "the loneliest people are the ones who spoke the truth". what i get from this is that those people who speak the truth are the ones who are punished for their honesty. it seems like society likes to be lied to in order just to feel better about themselves than to hear the true facts. too many people are afraid to test their ego.

language is a funny concept to me. Philosophers like Descartes and Socrates tell us not to believe our senses, but the whole concept of language is based on senses. In essence you say what you think are sounds that other people perceive the same way you perceive that when they make those same sounds. but how do you know what the people you think you are talking to are perceiving you in the same way? couldn't you just be thinking that you hear and are communicating with people when in reality your senses have completely lead you astray?

Language is a very important thing in our society; it is the means people communicate and how people express themselves. If you meet someone and they do not use language that is appropriate for their age and cannot express themselves well, you are going to think something is wrong with that person. We are taught how to speak from the minute we are born with everyone talking to us as babies. I grew up speaking Spanish and until I moved to California I did not really know how important and how useful it was to speak more than one language. I want to learn different languages such as Italian and Portuguese because I want to be able to communicate with different people using other languages. The link I have provided here shows us all the importance of language because of the interpretation that goes wrong in the clip. I hope you all enjoy it!
