I am not really into politics much, I care enough to vote wisely, but that's about it. I would consider myself a republican and like that Bush has a relationship with Jesus Christ. Is he perfect? Does he do everything he should and do it right? No. Even though I think Will Ferrel is hilarious and love almost everything he does, I still feel as though our presidents get way too much crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending them, just saying I'd like to see those who hassle them to see if they could do the job any better. As far as global warming goes, I do think there are many ways we can slow it down or diminish it in our lifetime. There are ways, but I'm not really sold that enough people in our lifetime will change THEIR ways. Leonardo Dicaprio is making/has mad a film about this issue. Here is the preview of it: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=12416787

I actually agreed with the statement that the generation of people I was born in are over privilaged and do not understand or act on the notion of hard work. I find that I encounter many people my own age who do not know how to work hard for things. People are used to be given things and opportunities without having to strive for them. At the same time I can understand that our generation is just not use to working hard the same way that past generations did. Today we are required to be able to work well with technology instead of knowing how to push a plow through a field. But I do know from personal experience that my generation has a different idea of what it means to work hard, whether or not it is wrong is subjective. I find myself not understanding the work that my parents had to put in to create the life they have. At the same time my parents don't understand the things that I have to go through in order to achieve my goals. http://youtube.com/watch?v=RY1Bl4nfpdA is a video about the indigo girls and their song "Closer to Fine." I think the Indigo Girls write songs with great messages that make you think. This particular song I like because it expresses the viewpoing that there are many answers to the same question and that life is an adventure of growing.

Knowledge conquers ignorance and arrogance, i find this statement hard to believe. i am subjected to hundreds of people a day all from different educational backgrounds and economic class, and with this exposer i have found that the ones who are ignorant and arrogant are those with high levels of education. when you are educated you forget that your opinion is not always correct nor will it always matter. they begin to portray themselves as their label. (ie: doctor, lawyer engineer) they forget that they are no different than the people with something as simple as a degree and visual communication. they just have a few other letters and maybe a extra year or two tacked on to their college time.

I recently watched the Filipino Prisoner Thriller video on YouTube. It's something else; I recommend it. What an unfortunately novel idea to have prisoners work together, completing a world record of over 900 people doing Japan's Algorhythm March...and to dance Michael Jackson's Thriller. The last innovative prison administrator I remember hearing anything about (which is not to say there haven't been many interesting things done since) was a man from Texas (?) forcing the prisoners to work for extremely little money out in the desert, in pink underwear, eating bologna sandwiches. I remember thinking it was right somehow. He stressed (this Texan man in charge of the prison) that the reason the prisoners were there was that they had broken laws and therefore stripped of their privileges, stripped of any rights. My young mind agreed- it seemed fair, right, just. I cannot now believe that I could have thought that way. When are men to say when nature's free will is gone, when all rights can be stripped? I will not go to prison, considering it solely depends on me, but I would like to think that rehabilitation is possible. There exists unspeakable crime, disgusting horrible evil that cannot be allowed in free society. I hope rehabilitation is possible and that we can get better at doing it, so that I don't have to think about what to do if rehabilitation isn't possible and what that might mean.

you may have to copy and paste to your browser. I just like this song because it says a very basic truth that I strongly belive in: it is not enough to know ourselves. Until we are seen by others as we see ourselves, we are alone. To be seen, heard, understood and appreciated is the mirror we need to know that we are real -- it actually helps us to know that WE are not just some projection from our own "reality machine". sending humanitarian love to you all, you bright little beings of light! I really enjoyed the John Legend song "Ordinary People" because I think it is a song that everyone can relate to. He talkes about the hard times of life and of relationships and proves that no one is perfect. It may appear that things are perfect on the surface, but behind closed doors it's a different world. I liked the lyrics and thought they were something important that should be noticed. The lyrics are so important because it breaks down relationships and shows that we are just ordinary people that have ups and downs and if you take things slow and not jump to conslusions or rush things, you might be able to maintain a better grip on the situation. My favorite part of the video was the water glass at the end. It simply showed a glass of water on top of his piano. The symbolism behind this glass of water concluded the song perfectly because life and relationships are all based on what you make of them. You can look at life as a glass of water that's either half empty or half full. It was a great way to add extra meaning and spark to the song.
This is a song that I found that I thought carried a lot of meaning. It teaches you not to take things or people for granted and shows you to value your relationships. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbcltLf2VHo -Lauren Maples |

I know I have to drop some links into this comment area of songs I think are appropos to the idea, but I need a bit more time -- will try tomorrow. meanwhile, fellow listeners:
Marsalis: Woah. Powerful. It's poetry and rhetoric (not the bad kind: the good kind, as in giving a sociologically important speech) with music in the background (I was so focused on the potency of his words and delivery I could barely attend to the sounds) There's actually too much to say about the form and content, so I can't. :) (and let that be enjoyable for those of you who've been wishing I didn't rag on as long as I ususally do! :) ) Legend: Oh, wow. Wow. wow. Look, I hardly ever shut up, even in print, but I wouldn't even know where to begin to start. OK, something sensible: If that could be shown to couples in marriage therapy, it might help some people. ..... If their hearts were open to hear it. But: Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, they can't hear your song. And so, sometimes people do break up. And then, eventually, if you're very brave, you sing your song to someone else who not only can hear it, but loves it. And hopefully, their own heat-song harmonizes with yours, and they love it when you sing it to them, too. OK, I can hear all the screaming and fake barfing noises from here, I know, goofy-mushy, so call me un-cool: but I believe in that little philosophy about love, sincerely! What's more: Going slow, no matter where you're at in getting or staying close to someone --- really good to hear that idea. We all need to get off the corporate adrenaline train, and go slow in our lives -- and how much more important could that be than when it means your heart, and how you share your life? OK, shutting up now. :) Go listen to Mettalica and shake it off! <G> Monica |

I think this song and video portray common family or relationship problems in our world today. Just like the song says, "we are just ordinary people", we can't be perfect and not all of us can get along or even act the way we should according to social standards. Usually in the end, we learn from our mistakes just like ordinary people and resolve our problems. A video that came to mind when I saw this was Mary J Blidge - run away love. It isnt doesnt exactly follow along with the concept of John Legend's video but it still presents common problems with families and human beings in general. It also hows light at the end of the tunnel for those with relationship problems. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7227271712937511349&q=mary+j+blige&total=2473&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=8

My personal philosophy is that yes, we do have one life. It is the only life we have that I know of. We need to make the most of it. Although we need to make the most of our own lives, we need to make sure our actions leave a positive consequence on the world. We are all connected and like the saying goes,"No man is an island unto himself." We all need to make sure we do our part to be happy but to not only make our lives happy but to live in a way to where it will leave the world in an upward sloping scale of happiness. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I think the movie "Crash" is an excellent movie that shows how we are all connected somehow through one anothers actions. Here is a clip of the movie to give you a taste if you ahven't seen it t:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsGjFCdm0X4

I already like John Legend, and I think that the song makes a lot of sense, and he sings wonderfully. I think it was great that this flick shows a lot of what everyone can go through. Conflicts between lovers, families, friends can be very sad, but we must get through them. Legend says we should take it slow, and I agree. I thought it was sad to watch what was going on, but I love the song, and Legend was making a good point with it. Here's my link, I thought it was funny: http://u-tube.ws/search.php?q=genre%3ADANCE |

I was really excited to see how many people chose to discuss music on this page. I think music is the one thing all humans have in common. We all may have different taste in music and how we like it played, but music has the power to unite us. I sound really lame right now but i think I can handle it. =) I wanted to leave you with my version of a love song and if anyone would like to add a video or song of what their favorite love song is that would be cool, or just enjoy the tunes. =)

I found it very surprising to find a formely new astablished r&b singer on page of philosophical ideas. I really enjoy John Legend and most of all his recordings, however, this video about life and we are all ordinary people i sone of his best recordings. I found that this song along with the video speak the truth about people, everyone is quick to judges those who make mistakes or let certain situations get the best of them (however, it does not make it right) and in the end we are all the same with some the same problems at hand. I believe that this song goes along with Nozick theorys and writing on Emotions. Our successes and failures do not after all matter very much... One of the signs of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important. Bertrand Russell -- The Conquest of Happiness (1930). At first I like the song, it's very smooth and makes me feel relaxing while working full time and taking classes in the summer. I will definitely save the song, secondly, I like the objects they are forming: car, human house, which represents the nature and our everyday's life. We need a car to work, we need a house a live, we need to eat...etc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9dhO0iCLww&NR=1 |

I like the U2 song "One" on the page, it talked about having one life and one love which is true. No body knows for sure that there is a heaven or an after life, so we only have one life to live. This relates to what we are learning about with same sex marriages, if you love some one and want to be with them forever, it's dumb to have a law that doesnt allow people who are in love get married just because they are of the same sex. You only live once and that life is short enough as it is not to be with people and do things that make you happy. Some people think that they have terrible lives, but if you think about there are alot more people out there that are worse off in life. Be happy for the things that you have in life and do what makes you happy because it is your life and no one elses.
this is a clip of the music video Good day-Ice cube...because you should do whatever you want to be happy and have a good day : ) http://youtube.com/watch?v=8GxmhJUi9qM |

I love this song. I know U2 can be kind of corny a lot of the time - especially Bono - but some of their songs give me goosebumps. I love the lyrics -
One life - You got to do what you should One life With each other Sisters, Brothers One life, But we're not the same We get to, Carry each other It makes me think of how we often think that we're alone in the world, and we're the only ones with problems, but really everyone feels that way. We have to be there for people, "carry each other" because life is about community and love. We have to remember that there are other people besides our selves, and we must care about them too. U2 does a good job with this idea in their songs, but they have nothing on the best musical authority on peace - John Lennon. The song Imagine is possibly the greatest song about "peace and love" ever made. Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace Those lyrics seems even more relevant today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsrW3PJOhao |

"To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance. " This quote is very powerful and applies to each and every one of us. Everyday we are challenged and everyday we must pull up everything in us to achieve a certain goal or result. We all have a voice that we need to use to speak up and to make ourselves heard. We take of changing the world, well it will never change unless we can stand up and make a change. John Mayer's song "waiting on the world to change" is an example of this laziness many people today have. Let's wait for the world around us to change and be better. That could take years. What about stepping up and making the change yourself. Speak your mind, what's the worse that could happen? Below I'm supplying a link to John Mayer's song (blaaahh) and another song by Desiree which speaks of being bold and strong and challenging life, she speaks of working to make a change.... not wait for one.
