Skepticism - PhilWikiWiki

Skepticism is a word highly demonized. In my opinion, a skeptic personality, not overly exaggerated, can be the most efficient way to absorb the infinite answers to the universes most intriguing questions.
We are born dumb and naive, we believe for fact everything we are told at our infancy, and we come of mental age during our teens and are taught to start questioning issues in order to better informed, yet those that tell us to question dare not let us question them. Historically, kingdoms that would conquer others would instill fear through use of military power yet they would enforce their will upon those they enslave by lies that that would keep those citizens in doubt of the own existence.
Quite a few philosophical skeptics though however, in my opinion, were fatalists as they found comfort in not knowing. This mind set makes one to seem that they believe that we cursed not to know the truth and therefore search no further for it. They were of the belief that because they can disprove a particular ‘school of thought’ to be true, they can find comfort in the ignorance of knowing that they don’t know. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but these type of philosophers contributed little to themselves as they did contribute little to solving the universes mysteries by this passive attitude, rather it was those minds that were skeptic and pursued the path that their skepticism led them in an objective manner.
Below is an excerpt on the Stoic view of philosophy sourced from the Stanford Encylopedia of Philosophy. "Though it seems clear that some Stoics took a kind of perverse joy in advocating views which seem so at odds with common sense, they did not do so simply to shock. Stoic ethics achieves a certain plausibility within the context of their physical theory and psychology, and within the framework of Greek ethical theory as that was handed down to them from Plato and Aristotle."
Great people in this world have been persecuted countless times for seeking ‘the solitary truth’. Being in ages overshaddowed by obviously seeming falacies to present observers, some boldly or cautiously undertook the quest for the real truths, no matter how controversial and contrary to popular belief . Such people include Galileo Galilei with his truth about the sun not orbiting the earth rather the reverse, fueled by skepticism, and also Charles darwin on the theory of evolution, I think in its own humble way, was fueled by skepticism, and these two are just a tip of the iceberg of the celebrated many, how about the countless modest more?
Therefore if Skepticism truly is a search for the Objective rather than the Subjective truth, it must follow that there is only one truth to be found, and anything other than that would be equivocal, thus an absurd conclusion. However, If the truth were indeed a Subjective entity, this would lay to rest the argument of the skeptic as each person can come to the essence of their own truth.
It is therefore my deepest belief that skepticism is a human phenomenon coded in our DNA; such so that it would set us apart in development from all other terrestrial life forms in development. Many other beings just follow what their genetic code instructs them to do, whereas, man has a ‘safety catch’ in their code to help them progress. This phenomenon, however, does not reap benefit to an individual, only torment, but rather functions to serve a conglomerate. This is because it is very difficult to doubt ones self, rather it is easier to doubt another and therefore by doubting one another, we come to realize our own mistakes in a different light hence progress is achieved.
Some scientist have the perception of man of being one step away from the cave; that if for some unspeakable reason the world lost all its important wealth of knowledge, like computers, science, calculus and the likes, we would be ‘stuck in the cave’, and be as backward as those we study from the Paleolithic Era, in respect to intellect. What would help spark man’s return to present day technology? You may be ‘skeptical’ about my answer, but I think a big part would be skepticism!
