My overview on Thought Experiments
*The volume is kinda low, might need headphones!
Select ONE of the Thought Experiment from the links below. Follow the four steps below. Divide your paper into the 4 sections below. There is no right answer per se in a Thought Experiment. It's your experiment to run, and your conclusion to draw. But, there is a clear, sustained, focused, deep analysis in experiments! Papers should be 2 pages or so, give or take (double spaced).

Four Steps For Thought Experiments.
1. First, state the overall conclusion you are lead to as a result of your thought experiment. This is essentially the end result of the experiment, but let the reader know right away what claim (conclusion) the rest of the paper will be supporting. Here, there is no one right conclusion, but what matters is that whatever you say is supported by the reasoning below. So, ask yourself, what claim is best supported by the reasoning involved in your thought experiment, and state that right away. This can be a short introductory paragraph, no fluff, just get to the point. If you are unsure what your conclusion should be, an easy place to look is at the 'hypothesis' or statement or question I put at the top of the page for the thought experiment you selected. Whatever perspective you are lead to on that statement after the thought experiment can be your conclusion. However, you can select any conclusion supported by your reasoning. It might be interesting to take the logic beyond the statement I put on the page. It's up to you.

Second: Briefly state the Hypothesis To Be Tested. Scientists perform experiments in order test out specific hypotheses, and thought experiments do the same. Ask yourself: What claim will be decided (or at least illuminated) as a result of the thought experiment? What philosophical issues does this raise? This may not always be obvious, so I have left statements, questions, etc. at the top of the page to help. Since that part is essentially done for you, I am looking for you to add something to it. Consider what real life issues are connected to the hypothesis. Then, briefly explainthe scenario of the thought experiment, what we are supposed to imagine being the case for the sake of the thought experiment. Why do you think these specific hypothetical assumptions were chosen? Scientific experiments are set up in order to 'control', isolate and understand a specific variable, and so too do thought experiments. What is the scenario trying to focus your attention on? the situation? To which, if any, real life situations is the hypothetical scenario analogous?

Third: Experimental Results: A scientific experiment is a process that culminates in some sort of result, and so too do thought experiments. But, here, the result is up to you, typically in the form of what answer you would give to a question, what decision you would make, what position you take. What conclusion did YOU arrive at in the thought experiment? What line of reasoning lead you to your conclusion? This is the most important part of the whole thought experiment. Justify your conclusion. Now,consider whether your conclusion would change if modifications were made to the scenario. What information, if added, would alter your conclusion.

4. Overall Conclusion: On the basis of this thought experiment, what position do you take on the initial hypothesis to be tested and/or any related issues in your mind. Explain what overall conclusions the thought process you have engaged in here lead you to.

Below is what I would consider a decent thought experiment, not the very best, but good.
NOTE: This was submitted before I changed the directions above (I just did this). I don't have any available yet that fit the new directions, but hopefully it will be useful anyway.
Thought Experiment List:

The remaining three steps are for you. The Experimental Thinking List below can also be used for this assignment.

Experimental Thinking List
: You can complete a Thought Experiment Assignment by choosing from the list below as wellas the one above. However, these do not fit the criteria for thought experiments quite as well as the list above. In a sense, it's a sloppier experiment, but still an experiment. You might need to impose more structure on these yourself than with the list above. If you are game for that, these might appeal to you. I will usually have a hypothesis to be tested on the page, but take that as a suggestion, not a requirement. You can propose your own. Also, the 'data' for this experiment is anything on the page (except the advertisements!), that includes music and video as well as text. Here you are sifting through all the 'data' presented and making an all things considered judgement on the hypothesis, adding additional conclusions that you may have arrived at in the process.

A brief overview on thought experiments that also describes 'experimental thinking'. (Thanks toUNC Philosophy Department).

If I were placed in the same situation as Tanya or Cinque, I would like to confess, because it would help me to release from my mind and make me to feel better, and this is a kind of moral right. But if Tanya or Cinque is my friend, I would think more about them and remain silent. I believe the police will find out the truth, and I will get satisfied because I had not betrayed my friends.

If the one who I cooperated with doesn’t my friend, I will choose confess to get parole. In this situation I will just care about my self because we are all criminals, and no one will be release as innocent. This is not considered as unscrupulous, because if we know what moral right is, we would not rob the bank, and this is a kind of action I know what I did is wrong, and I want to return to the right moral track. Although this looks like I’m a selfish person, this isn’t wrong. I made something wrong and I confess that, this actually is the morals return. Why the police arrests people who violated the law, because it can prevent they do this again. In my opinion, the moral right is depends on the law.
In another situation, if the one who I cooperated with is my friend. I might have to remain silent. I just want to give a simple example to explain why I choose this. At 1937-1945, during the most chaotic time in China, all Chinese were resisting Japanese's aggression. When Communist party’s member had been arrested, they would not say any thing to Japanese soldiers even they had been maltreated, because they all have one goal. They think about others more than themselves, because if they said something to Japanese, their comrades will be arrested or killed. In this situation, remain silent is the best way to protect your friends, at least you will not make your friends in trouble or get punishment because of you. And I would like to spend more jail life to let my mind comfort because I didn’t make my friends in trouble.

In my opinion, I will choose confess if I think about myself only. Confession is the best choice when you made mistakes, even it can’t retrieve what I did, but the one who confesses will get release from his mind. It means that he knows what he did was wrong, and it’s the best way to get pardon.
