Pilates first developed in the early 20th Century by Joseph Pilates. As of 2005 there are 11 million people who practice Pilates in the United States. It was formed during the First World War as a form of rehabilitation for returning soldiers. The soldiers focused on stretching, strengthening, and stabilizing key muscles.
His methods were called Contrology because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The main principles are to condition the entire body through proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing and flowing movement. It is a program, which focuses on the core muscles which help to keep the body in balance and also are essential for providing support for the spine. It also teaches awareness of breath, and alignment of the spine. The goal is to strengthen the deep torso muscles.
Another central goal is mind over matter. This is to create fusion between the mind and the body. This eventually will create a union between the mind and the body, so that the body will move with balance and grace. It is crucial that one pay attention to one’s body while doing the movements and be aware of their breathing.
Breathing is another main focus in order for Pilates to be successful. You want your blood to circulate through your body and to get rid of the toxins through proper breathing. Breathing is essential for proper posture and also to relax your muscles. Each Pilates exercise comes with specific breathing instructions.
Since Pilates uses intense focus, one learns to pay close attention to their body. This has also proved to be helpful in providing relief for those who are suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.
