As I read more and learn more about the very popular philosophers from many years ago such as Plato and Socrates, I see where and why they would still be popular today. I found a great website that talks about Plato and Socrates, and gives me a great perspective on them and their wisdom. He was said to neglect his own affairs and instead spent more time discussing things like virtue, success, justice and right conduct in order to morally improve Athens. I can see how this would intrigue people about him today in the sense that people today are so concerned with themselves and superficially bettering themselves that they forget to notice that true change starts with wise people like Socrates. I also notice how he can influence people today is by his ability to ask a lot of questions. I know that a lot of people are scared to ask questions (myself included) for fear of looking like they are not smart. But how can one get smart without acquiring knowledge which often comes from asking questions. The last part I would really like for him not to pass on to people today is that he willingly killed himself.

I also see how people would look to Plato for wisdom. His ideas have stuck with some people today, about the world being good. If Jesus had come before Plato’s time, I do believe he probably would have been a Christian. Plato was a teacher, for the most part, teachers are normally wise and have many people look to them for wisdom. Since this is still the case today, I can see why people would look to the writings and literature of Plato and Socrates as well as many other ancient philosophers. After all, if they were not wise, they wouldn’t be relevant today.
